August Gottlieb Spangenberg

August Gottlieb Spangenberg ( born July 25, 1704 Velcro Mountain, County Hohenstein, † September 18, 1792 in Berthelsdorf, Electorate of Saxony ) was the second founder of the Evangelical Brethren. He was commonly called "Brother Joseph ", precisely because he - took care of his brothers - as Joseph in the First Book of Moses in the Bible.

Life

Spangenberg studied at the University of Jena in 1732 and received theology at the Theological Faculty of the University of Halle an appointment as Adjunct. As such, Spangenberg was appointed to the Francke Foundations, where he worked as an inspector of the orphanage.

After he was expelled in 1733 by the king's command hall to Spangenberg joined the Moravian Church and took over the next few years, several missionary journeys through Europe and the English colonies in America. 1744 convened the Moravian Church as Bishop Spangenberg and 1762, according to Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf's death, he became his successor.

At the age of 88 years August Gottlieb Spangenberg died on 18 September 1792 in Berthelsdorf at Herrnhut.
