August Hauner

August Hauner, 1858 by Hauner, origin. Napoleon (Michael Simon ) Hauner ( born October 29, 1811 in Neumarkt-Sankt Veit, † June 11, 1884 in Munich) was a German pediatrician, professor and founder of the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital in Munich.

Life and work

August Hauner was born in the Bavarian town of Neumarkt an der Rott and studied medicine in Munich and Vienna. In July 1835, he earned his doctorate at the University of Munich on " De febri puerperali " ( "From puerperal fever "). From 1837 to 1845 practiced Hauner first in Tann ( Lower Bavaria ), later in Murnau. In 1845 he moved to Munich, where he worked first as " urban poor people's doctor " for an annual salary of 150 florins. Finally, the then thirty-three Hauner 1846 opened a private pediatric clinic in a rented apartment in the sun road 27, financed by equity and donations of a set up for that purpose association, which stood under the patronage of Queen Therese, the wife of King Ludwig I.. It was one of the first children's hospitals in the German-speaking and had the St. Anna Children's Hospital in Vienna ( founded in 1837 ) as a model. With high energy, he campaigned for the smallpox vaccination, which he regarded as a great blessing to the invention.

Hauner succeeded in decades of efforts to attract numerous patrons for his idea of ​​a large public pediatric clinic. On March 15, 1882 modern hospital building was handed over to the Lindwurmstraße its determination. His tomb is located in the Old South Cemetery in Munich. In his home town remembers a street to him.
