August Pauly

Pauly August Friedrich ( since 1841 by Pauly, born May 9, 1796 in Benningen am Neckar near Ludwigsburg, † May 2, 1845 in Stuttgart ) was a German philologist Classic.

Work

Pauly's main work is the real encyclopedia of classical Alterthumswissenschaft in alphabetical order, which he published in 1837 and was also named after him. Pauly died in 1845 before he could finish his work; this took Ernst Christian Walz and Wilhelm Siegmund Teuffel in the next seven years. This first edition consisted of six volumes. A second edition was taken in the years 1861-1866 in attack, but never completed. ( A new edition of the work was concerned by Georg Wissowa, after which it is also known as Pauly - Wissowa. A summary of these is The Little Pauly, published in five volumes from 1964 to 1975. Put on the updated and revised the encyclopedia in 1996 -2003 published under the title the New Pauly. )

Pauly August Friedrich wrote as a member of the Royal statistical- topographic Bureaus within the Württemberg Description more Oberamt descriptions. In 1841 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Württemberg Crown.
