August Piepenhagen

August Friedrich Piepenhagen ( born August 2, 1791 in Soldin, Prussia, † September 27, 1868 in Prague ) was a landscape painter Prague.

Life

August Piepenhagen came from a modest background and initially took on a button and Schnürmacherlehre. The journeyman hike led him to Switzerland, where the impressive landscape inspired him to autodidactic attempts at painting. In 1831 he came to his journey to Prague, where he was to remain in the future. This was followed by his first marriage and exhibitions in Prague. Piepenhagen had his life to do so, to support his family, although he was able to sell very many of his landscapes. His two daughters, Charlotte (1821-1902) and Louise (1825-1893) have also been trained by him to painters. Piepenhagen died on the estate Jenerálka in Prague. He was buried in the Protestant cemetery of Prague suburb Karlin ( Karlin ). His grave was designed by sculptor Thomas Seidan.

Works

August Piepenhagen was pure landscape painter, his skills primarily self taught appropriated and was able to create his images always next to his actual day job. His landscapes, which were designed romantic and full of atmosphere, enjoyed the Prague audience popularity. His paintings were collected to rule, but were also not very expensive to purchase. Adalbert Stifter, himself also a landscape painter, Piepenhagen greatly admired and said he was " the seal most landscapist, I know now. "
