August Ritter (civil engineer)

Georg Dietrich August Ritter ( born December 11, 1826 in Lüneburg, † February 26, 1908 ) was a German professor of mechanics and astrophysicists. He developed the Rittersche cut method for calculating bar forces in trusses.

August Ritter studied 1843-1846 in Hanover and from 1850 to 1853 in Göttingen, where he received his doctorate. He then became a teacher in 1856 at the Polytechnic Institute in Hannover. In October 1870 Knight became the first Professor of Engineering Mechanics and Mechanics at the Technical University of Aachen. He remained in Aachen until his retirement in 1899. In 1903 he returned to his native town of Lüneburg, where he died in 1908. For much of his estate he bequeathed books the library of the Technical University of Aachen. Some of his textbooks were published in English and French.

According to Knight of the Knights crater and the adjacent knight - grooves are named on the moon.
