August Schenk

August Joseph Schenk ( born April 17, 1815 in Hallein, † March 30, 1891 in Leipzig ) was a German botanist and paleontologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Schenk ".

Schenk studied in Munich, Erlangen, Berlin and Vienna Science and Medicine, habilitated in 1841 as Associate Professor of Botany, first in Munich, then in Würzburg; where he was Professor of Botany in 1845. In 1868 he was appointed professor at the University of Leipzig, where he also headed the Botanical Gardens. In 1887 he retired.

  • Contributions to the flora of the ancient world (Kassel 1863)
  • Contributions to the flora of the Keuper and Rhaetic formation ( Bamb. 1864, with 8 plates )
  • The fossil flora of the boundary layers of the Keuper and Lias franc ( Wiesb. 1865-67, with 45 panels )
  • The fossil flora of the north-west German Wealdenformation (Kassel in 1871, with 22 plates )
  • Plants from the coal formation and Jurassic plants from China ( in Richthofen's "China", Vol 4, 1882).
  • For the "Flora Brasiliensis " of the German botanist and naturalist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius he edited the Alströmeriaceen, for the Count Széchenyi collected on his journey fossil plants (1883 )
  • Co-editor: "Manual of Botany " ( Bresl. 1879-86, 3 vols This particular reprinted: The fossil remains of plants, 1888)
  • With Christian Luerssen he published the "Messages from the general field of botany " ( Leipz., 1871-75 ).
  • Also in the publication of Zittel's "Handbook of paleontology ," he has been involved Schimpers death.
