August Silberstein

August Karl Silberstein ( born July 1, 1827 in Budapest, † March 7, 1900 ) was an Austrian writer and revolutionary.

Life

Silberstein attended high school in oven and was a clerk in Vienna. He left the commercial profession and studied at the University of Vienna. In 1848 he was elected secretary of the magazine " Aula ". He joined the Academic Legion and was active with his satirical magazine flares for the revolution of 1848/ 49 in the Empire of Austria. When they failed, and the magazine was censored, he fled in 1851 to Germany. After his return, he was tried by a military court in 1854 and sentenced to five years imprisonment on the Spielberg, but amnestied after two years.

Influenced by the rural life Silberstein wrote stories about village life and published popular fable collections. His poems influenced contemporaries like Peter Roseggerhaus; some were set to music, for example, "If you have a sweet darling " by Johann Strauss ( father) and " Germanic " and " Helgoland" by Anton Bruckner.
