August von Pettenkofen

August Xaver Karl Ritter von Pettenkofen ( born May 10, 1822 in Vienna, † March 21 1889 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter, lithographer, illustrator and cartoonist.

Life

August Pettenkofen was the son of a landowner and merchant Anton Pettenkofen and his wife Maria Anna of Nespern. After the death of his father, August grew by Pettenkofen together with his cousin and later poets Ferdinand von Saar in Vienna. In 1834, he entered the Vienna Academy, became a pupil of Leopold Kupelwieser and later by Franz Eybl. During this time he dealt with the typical genre painting of the Viennese Biedermeier.

1841-1843 he did his military service in 1848 he was the illustrator of the Austrian war coverage under the influence of Carl Schindler. In the course of these activities, he came into the Hungarian city of Szolnok. This stay was a key experience for the artist described as shy as he led him to a new scenic view. In 1852 he traveled to Paris, where he made ​​contact with the landscape painting of the Barbizon School. In 1866 Pettenkofen was admitted to the Vienna Academy, 1872, he was made an honorary member of the Munich Academy. Pettenkofen whose works have been highly appreciated during his lifetime, was raised in 1876 to knighthood. Between 1870 and 1880 he traveled to Venice almost every year. In 1889 he died at the sanatorium Loew in his hometown of Vienna. In the same year Pettenkofengasse the artist was named in honor in Vienna highway. In 1893, he received a joint honorary grave with Leopold Karl Müller at the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 14 A, number 29 ), which was designed by Viktor Tilgner.

Work

August Pettenkofen was one of the largest Biedermeier genre painter of the monarchy. In addition to scenes of Viennese folk life, he created numerous small-sized soldiers and village scenes. Most typically, are representations of Hungarian and Slovakian markets, farms and wagons. He founded the school of painting Szolnok, an artists' colony in the Hungarian city of Szolnok. Thanks to its particular lighting conditions he created interesting landscapes that influenced the Austrian landscape painting sustainable.
