The local music teacher Peter Piel was his role model. From 1871 to 1873 he worked as a teacher in Bad Salty on the Rhine. In 1873 he followed the vocation as a music teacher at the preparatory school in Colmar and was since 1876 at the high school and higher school for girls in Sarreguemines active. In 1880 he went to the newly established teacher training college in Munstermaifeld to then act in 1888 as the successor Toepler until his retirement in Brühl near Cologne. Wiltberger was married to Theresa Wiltberger, born Grünewald.

Since 1879 he was a member of the Speakers College of St. Cecilia Association, whose objective he actively supported the training of student teachers and organists. It is to be mentioned in the same breath with composers such as Haller, Peter Griesbach, Immanuel Faisst, Vinzenz Goller and wrote like this almost all his compositions for amateur choirs. His printed Opus, mostly published by Schwann in Dusseldorf, ending with No. 163 Just before he died in 1928, he was made an honorary citizen of Bad Sobernheim.

The 2007 founded August Wiltberger Choir is named after the composer. This is the choir of the parish community bathroom Sobernheim.

A plaque for August Wiltberger and his brother Henry was unveiled on the east side of the Maltese Chapel, close to the former site of the birthplace of the brothers, solemnly in Bad Sobernheim on Pentecost Sunday, 19 May 2013. The plaque originally hung above the entrance of the birthplace, the later Catholic elementary school. After its demolition it was loaned to the museum of local history of the city.
