Augusta Read Thomas

Augusta Read Thomas ( born April 24, 1964 in Glen Cove / New York) is an American composer and music educator.

Thomas studied at Northwestern University, Yale University and the Royal Academy of Music in London. From 1993 to 2001 she taught at the Eastman School of Music, after which they had to 2006, the Wyatt Professor of Music at Northwestern University held. In addition, they were several summer courses at the Tanglewood Music Center. From 1997 to 2006 she was composer -in-residence of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 2009 she was the director of the Festival of Contemporary Music at Tanglewood. In the same year she was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Thomas has composed orchestral works and chamber music, choral works and several ballets. She was, inter alia, Prizes and awards the Siemens Foundation in Munich, the ASCAP, the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Koussevitzky Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts. In 2007 she was with the composition Astral Canticle one of two finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
