Augusta, Sicily

Augusta is a city of Syracuse with 36,075 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the region of Sicily in Italy and the name of the island on which is a part of the city.

Location and data

Augusta is located 35 kilometers north of Syracuse. The inhabitants mainly work in the industry. Are produced in Augusta and Augusta- Priolo ships, petroleum products, plastics, and concrete. Augusta- Priolo is Sicily 's largest industrial complex.

Augusta is base of the Marina Militare, the Italian Navy.

History

The place was built by the Normans. Frederick II built the harbor became an important military port. 1268 the city of Anjou was conquered and became part of the House of Aragon. During the Franco - Spanish war in 1676, the city was badly damaged. In the 1693 earthquake, the city was totally destroyed. On July 10, 1943, American troops landed here, which destroyed the city for the last time.
