The Augustana College Neuendettelsau is a Theological College, which was founded in 1947 by decision of the General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria for the training of theologians in Neuendettelsau ( Middle Franconia ).

Training

The university has six theological chairs (Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, Systematic Theology, Intercultural Theology, Practical Theology ) and a chair of philosophy, professor of feminist theology, two lecturers of Classical Philology (Latin, Greek) and a lectureship in Hebrew. Through the scientific assistants and various lecturers the range of topics is complemented ( for example, voice training and liturgical singing, Bavarian church history, canon law ).

The Rector manages and represents the university. He is responsible for the proper implementation of the decisions of the organs of the university. History

The roots of the University date back to the autumn of 1945, when the church leadership theologian Georg Merz thus commissioned to establish theological courses for returning home from war and captivity pastor. Half a year after the first theological college course began in April 1946, the first course for students of theology. Students and faculty were housed at that time still in the Diakonissenanstalt Neuendettelsau and the former Cistercian monastery Heilsbronn ( used until 1952). It was only in May 1949 moved the Augustana College over in a former military barracks, where it remains today.

In May 1947, it came to the official foundation of the university (then Theological College in Neuendettelsau - called Heilsbronn ) with Georg Merz as founding rector. From his pen comes enrollment spell until today still valid:

In December 1973 the university was awarded on the basis of the Bavarian Higher Education Act, the right to award doctorates in cooperation with the faculties of Erlangen and Munich. Since July 1974, the Augustana College is a member of the German Rectors 'Conference (then West German Rectors' Conference ).

Since December 1990, the university is the theological faculties at the universities legally equal and has the independent right to award doctorates and professorships. In September 1992, a second lectureship in Classics and a chair of philosophy was established. Since the winter semester 1997/98, there is a lectureship in Theology Women's Studies / Feminist Theology, which was converted to a professorship in the winter semester 2003/ 04.

Library

The university has a presence and lending library with a book stock of more than 150,000 volumes, mainly from the 19th to the 21st century, to a small extent to the 16th century, including a collection of pamphlets of the Reformation. The library is a member of the Association of ecclesiastical and academic libraries.
