Auguste Chevalier

Auguste Jean Baptiste Chevalier ( born June 23, 1873 in Domfront, † June 3, 1956 in Paris) was a French botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " A.Chev. ".

He worked among others with the plant world in Africa, the taxonomy of cultivated plants and the plant geography.

Life and work

Auguste Jean Baptiste Chevalier was born on 23 June 1873 in Domfront, his parents farmed there a smaller homestead. He attended school in Domfront and then changes to Caen, where he graduated in 1891. The botanist Antoine Élie Octave Lignier commissioned him in 1893 to create a complete catalog of the various herbaria in Caen.

In 1894, Chevalier had to begin his military service. After his graduation, he took in 1896 to study at the University of Lille. There he became assistant to the chemist Charles Eugène Bertrand. After one year, 1897, he received a scholarship and could henceforth work in the botany laboratory of Philippe van Tieghem in the Muséum national d' histoire naturelle in Paris.

From 1899 to 1900 he took part in a field trip to Sudan in part and received his doctorate in 1901. Consequently, he undertook a series of research trip to Africa, but also visited Asia and South America. He worked as a preparator at the École pratique des hautes études, the Vice President, he was in 1907 and director in 1912.

He received in 1929 a professor at the National Museum, where he held a chair of Agricultural Sciences and in 1937 became a member of the Académie des sciences. In 1946, Chevalier was to retire and died in Paris in 1956.

In his research trips in Indochina 1913-1919 he collected the first specimens of Cycas Palmfarns chevalieri, which was named in his honor after him. Furthermore, the Lycée was named after him in Domfront.
