Auguste Herbin

Auguste Herbin ( born April 29, 1882 in Quiévy at Cambrai, † January 31, 1960 in Paris) was a French painter of classical modernism.

Life

The craftsman 's son from the small town Quiévry on the French- Belgian border, studied from 1899 to 1901 at the École des Beaux -Arts in Lille, settling long-term in 1901 settled in Paris. Beginning in 1901, he held repeated in Bruges and on which he established artistic contacts. In the Salon des Independants of 1905 he exhibited for the first time from his works. Two years later he participated together with the Fauves at the Salon d' Automne, however, he turned to the encounter with Juan Gris already in the following year and moved to Cubism in 1909 in the Bateau - Lavoir where, for example Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso had their studios. In 1916 he signed a contract with Léonce Rosenberg gallery in Paris. There he had each individual exhibitions in the years 1918, 1921 and 1924.

Herbin was in 1931, along with Georges Vantongerloo and other artists, co-founder of the artist group Abstraction- Création in Paris. In the same year he was also Associate Editor of abstraction, création, art non figuratif.

He was also involved after the Second World War to the establishment of the Salon des Nouvelles Réalités, 1955 and its President.

Herbin, who suffered from 1953 to a paralysis of the right half of the body and had to change his work and especially his painting on the left hand, died unexpectedly on 31 January 1960 in Paris.

He left behind an unfinished picture he even named yet: Fin ( French for " end ").

Auguste Herbin trained his niece, the artist Geneviève Claisse (1935 ) in painting.

Work

In Paris, the artist initially devoted himself to Impressionism. A little later he joined temporarily the Fauves, from 1908 his works are marked by Cubism.

After the year 1926, Herbin images are characterized by the use of elementary shapes such as triangles, circles, segments of circles, rectangles, or trapezoids in pure colors. His paintings are now on pure abstraction.

From 1946 Herbin developed a composition system called alphabet plastique, which is based on a letter structure. He published in 1949 a unique color theory ( which is linked to Goethe's color theory ) in his treatise L'art non- figuratif non- objectif.
