Augustin-Alexandre Dumont

Augustin -Alexandre Dumont or Auguste Dumont ( born August 14, 1801 in Paris, † January 28, 1884 ) was a famous French sculptor.

Life

Augustin -Alexandre was the eldest son of three children of the artist couple, Jacques- Edme Dumont (1761-1844) and Marie Louise Elisabeth Curton. His younger sister Jeanne Louise (1804-1875) was a famous pianist. The family lived in the newly established art colony at the Sorbonne and Augustin -Alexandre grew up in a liberal and cultural environment. Soon recognized his father 's talent of his son and advised him strongly to study in Paris. He enrolled at the prestigious École des Beaux -Arts to study under Pierre Cartellier on. In 1823 Dumont won with a sculpture of the Prix de Rome and thus a multi-year art scholarship with residence in Rome. In the next seven years Dumont studied the old masters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. After his return to France, he opened a studio in Paris. Dumont made ​​extensive monumental portrait statues and allegorical figures for public buildings.
