Augustin Bea

Cardinal Augustin Bea, SJ ( born May 28, 1881 in Riedböhringen at Donaueschingen; † 16 November 1968, Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

After attending elementary school in Riedböhringen ( 1888-1893 ), and high school studies at the " Lender'schen Home Schooling " in Sasbach, at the Gymnasium in Konstanz ( 1897-1898 ) and at the Archbishop's high-school seminary in Rastatt ( 1898-1900 ) joined Augustin Bea, son of a carpenter, in June 1900 graduated from high school in all academic subjects as "very good".

Study

He then studied at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau 1900-1902 Catholic theology. On April 8, 1902 Bea joined the Jesuit Order. After two years of novitiate he studied from 1906 to 1907 Philosophy at Ignatius College to Valkenburg (Netherlands) and in 1907 became Prefect of the College of the Society of Jesus in Sittard (Netherlands). After a brief period of study in the summer semester 1910 in Innsbruck, where he studied classical philology, he continued his theological studies in 1910 in Valkenburg continued and received there by Hermann Jürgens on August 25, 1912, the sacrament of Holy Orders. In 1913 he received a doctorate in theology. He then studied in 1913 at the former Berlin Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität, now Humboldt University nor one semester of Oriental and in 1914 became superior of the Jesuit residence in Aachen.

Scientific activity

1917 Bea was appointed professor of Old Testament exegesis and to the prefect of studies in the Ignatius House to Valkenburg and appointed Provincial of the newly formed Upper German Province of the Society of Jesus in Munich in 1921. In 1924 he took over the chair of biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and also became Superior of the religious institute for specialization in philosophy and Catholic theology in Rome. In 1924 he became professor of Biblical Introduction Science and Old Testament exegesis. In 1929 he took over the office of visitator the Catholic University of Tokyo and the Order of Mission in Japan. From 1930 to 1949 he was rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute. As chairman of the Commission for the new Latin translation of the Psalms (1940-1949), from the Bible Institute on behalf of Pope Pius XII. was edited, Bea earned great recognition.

Ecclesiastical career

Bea was the confessor of Pope Pius XII. In the Roman Curia he took over as a consultant to various tasks in committees and congregations. In 1931 he was appointed consultant to the Pontifical Biblical Commission, 1936 consultant to the Congregation for Seminaries and University, since 1949, in addition consultant to the Congregation of the Holy Office, and since 1950 as a consultant to the Congregation of Rites.

On December 14, 1959, the Kreierung cardinal and the appointment as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Saba, an early medieval church on the Aventine was small. His motto was: In nomine Domini Jesus ( "In the name of the Lord Jesus "). As a cardinal, he was a member of the Congregation of Rites, the seminaries and university Congregation, the Congregation for the Oriental Church, and the Commission for Bible studies.
