Augustin Roux

Augustine Roux (* 1726 in Bordeaux, † September 1, 1776 in Paris) was a French physician and translator.

Life and work

Roux studied medicine in his native city of Bordeaux, and was in 1750 a doctorate after he went to Paris, where he thanks to the recommendation from Montesquieu to obtain financial support from his family. This was denied him because he could not decide on an ecclesiastical career choice.

He learned English and translated several works in that language. He led a medical course and worked on the drafting of the Annales typographiques and was also aggregated as a doctor at the Medical Faculty of Paris, Faculté de médecine de Paris. In 1762 he became the successor of Charles -Augustin Vandermonde ( 1727-1762 ) determined the editor of the Journal of Medicine, Journal de médecine.

The extensive knowledge of chemistry led to his appointment as professor of this subject at the Faculty in the year 1771st

He gave two articles in the Encyclopédie (XIII, 906, XV, 607 ) by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d' Alembert -Baptiste. He was a regular visitor of Paul Henri Thiry d' Holbach Salon Coterie holbachique ( " Holbach'sche clique " )
