Augusto Giacometti

Antonio Augusto Giacometti ( born August 16, 1877 in Stampa, Bergell, † June 9, 1947 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter. He is regarded as an outstanding painter in the wake of Art Nouveau and Symbolism, as an innovator of glass painting and exponent of the monumental wall painting and designers that have become popular posters.

Life and work

Augusto Giacometti is part of the famous dynasty of painters of Giacometti. Just a few meters grew up next to the house of his cousin Giovanni Giacometti, he began at an early age to devote himself to painting. His training as a teacher of drawing, he completed 1894-1897 at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich. After his student years 1897-1901 Eugène Grasset in Paris, and after stints with residences in Florence and Zurich, he finally settled in 1915 in Zurich.

1917 Giacometti met the Dadaist Tristan Tzara, Marcel Janco, Sophie Taeuber- Arp and Hugo Ball know. He took part in the 8th Dada Soirée at Zurich Kaufleutensaal and became a member of the artist group " The New Life" ( 1918-1920 ).

With the execution of his design for the entrance hall of the police station in the Official House I in Zurich 1923-1925 Giacometti achieved one of his most important works, also known as Giacometti Hall. Thanks to this job, which was great attention immediately, the way to other important commissions was paved for him.

He was one of the first artists of the 20th century, the almost complete autonomy conceded the painting and took the plunge into the nonrepresentational. Giacometti was in the sequel to the great colorists. The inscription on his grave stone, " master of color ".

In 1929 he created the stained glass windows in the east wall of the Protestant town church in Frauenfeld, 1933, the choir window in the Grand Cathedral in Zurich, 1937, the choir windows of the village church Adelboden and 1945 a stained glass window in the cathedral in Zurich woman.
