Augusto Vargas Alzamora

Augusto Cardinal Vargas Alzamora SJ ( born November 9, 1922 in Lima, Peru, † September 4, 2000 ibid ) was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lima.

Life

Augusto Vargas Alzamora entered the Jesuit order in 1940 and studied in various houses of the Order in Peru, Argentina and Spain, the subjects of Catholic Theology, philosophy and pedagogy. At the University of Lima, he was awarded his doctorate in educational sciences. On 15 July 1955 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders. Then twenty years worked long as Spiritual and rector at the Jesuit school " La Inmaculada " in Lima. In addition, he served as master of novices, and as Provincial of the Jesuits for educational matters. He founded several schools and initiated a reorganization of the student ministry.

1978 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Cissi and appointed him Vicar Apostolic of San Francisco Javier (since 1980 Jaén en Peru o San Francisco Javier). The Bishop Augusto Vargas Alzamora ordained by the Apostolic Nuncio in Peru and later Cardinal Carlo Furno; Co-consecrators were the then Archbishop of Cuzco, Ricardo Durand Flórez SJ, and the then Archbishop of Trujillo, Manuel Prado Perez- Rosas SJ.

1989 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Lima; In 1994, he took it as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Roberto Bellarmine to the College of Cardinals. Augusto Cardinal Vargas Alzamora conducted from 1993 to 1999, the Peruvian Episcopal Conference.

He laid down the line of the Archdiocese of Lima in 1999 because of illness and worked the last months of his life as a homeless pastor. Augusto Cardinal Vargas Alzamora died on 4 September 2000 in Lima and was buried in the crypt of the basilica there.
