Since the Durlacher Protestant and Baden were Catholic, it was necessary to secure the freedom of religion of his subjects. Therefore, the Margrave referred to the long Catholic tradition of the Margraviate of Baden -Baden and operated the beatification of Margrave Bernhard II von Baden. To commemorate his ancestors and his beatification, he had the Bernhardusbrunnen build on the Rastatt marketplace. The contract of inheritance with the line of Baden- Durlach came about in 1765.
