Augustus O. Bourn

Augustus Osborn Bourn ( born October 1, 1834 in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † January 28, 1925 ) was an American politician and 1883-1885 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years

After primary school, Augustus Bourn attended Brown University. He then worked in the rubber factory of his father, which he later took over after his death and renamed Providence Rubber Company. A rubber factory, founded in the meantime by him in Bristol was incorporated into this company. Augustus Bourn was also a member of the militia of his state, in which he brought it up to lieutenant colonel of cavalry.

Political career

Augustus Bourn was a member of the Republican Party. For seven years he represented Bristol in the state Senate. In 1883 he was elected as a candidate of his party for governor of his state. After a re-election in 1884 he was able to exercise this office from 29 May 1883 to 26 May 1885. During this time the state constitution was extended by an amendment that gave the newly naturalized countrymen the right to vote. After the end of his governorship Bourn served four years as an American consul in Italy.

After the end of his political career, Augustus Bourn again devoted his personal and business affairs. He died in January 1925 at the age of 90 years. With his wife Elizabeth Roberts Morrill he had five children.
