Aukštojas Hill

The Aukstojas (also: Aukštojo kalnas, Aukštasis kalnas ) is 293.842 m, the highest elevation of Lithuania. The hill is part of Belarusian ridge and is located near the border with Belarus, near the village Medininkai, about 24 kilometers southeast of the capital, Vilnius. 2004, the survey was re-surveyed by the Institute of Geodesy of the Technical University Vilnius Gediminas with the help of GPS technology. Until then, the Juozapines kalnas with 292.7 m, about 500 m east of the Aukstojas as the highest point of the country. 1985 had raised concerns in this regard, the Lithuanian geographer and geomorphologist Rimantas Krupickas.

The governor of the district of Vilnius has rezoned the land previously farmed by the Aukstojas. It should be utilized as a tourist and cultural purposes. At the top, there is a grove of pine trees. The club Lietuvos viršūnės, led by Vladas Vitkauskas, a famous Lithuanian climbers, seeks to establish the mountain landscape as a monument of the region.

Aukstojas (also: Aukštėjas, Aukštujis ) is in the Lithuanian mythology a name for the supreme God, the Creator of the world. Libertas Klimka, professor at Vilnius Pedagogical University, proposed him as a name for the new highest peak in the country and thus won a contest. The mountain was baptized on 20 June 2005 in an unofficial ceremony. On 18 November 2005, the Regional Parliament gave its assent.
