Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen ( born April 9, 1935 in Salmi ) is a Finnish composer.

Life and work

Aulis Sallinen was born in 1935 in Salmi on Lake Ladoga (1940 annexed by the Soviet Union). He studied from 1955 at the Sibelius Academy under Aarre Merikanto Joonas Kokkonen and 1960, where he made his statements. From 1960 to 1970 Sallinen was director of the Radion sinfoniaorkestri ( RSO). He taught from 1965 to 1976 at the Sibelius Academy, music theory and composition. From 1971 to 1976 he was president of the Finnish Composers' Union.

1978 Sallinen received the Music Prize of the Nordic Council, for his opera Ratsumies. In 1983 he was honored along with Krzysztof Penderecki with the Wihuri Sibelius Prize.

  • Ratsumies ( The Horseman ), opera in 3 acts (1973 /74), Paavo Haavikko, commissioned by the city of Savonlinna for the 500 - year celebration of the traditional Olavinlinna, a festival venue
  • Punainen Viiva (the red line ), Opera in 2 acts ( 1976-78 ), based on the novel by Ilmari Kianto; Perf. 1978 in Helsinki National Opera; later in the Covent Garden Opera House, London
  • The King goes to France, opera in 3 acts (two parts ), libretto by Paavo Haavikko, perf. on July 7 at the 1984 Opera Festival in Savonlinna
  • Kullervo, Opera in 2 acts ( 1986-88 ), based on an episode of the Finnish national epic Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot and drama of the same name from 1864 by Kivi. The opera was first performed on 25 February 1992 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles
  • Elämän yes Kuoleman lauluja ( Songs of Life and Death ), opera (1994 )
  • Kuningas Lear ( King Lear ), opera (1999), based on the eponymous play by William Shakespeare
  • Barabbas Dialogues, oratorio for singers, narrator and chamber ensemble, opus 84 commissioned work for the music festival in Naantali, Finland 2003 German premiere as a chamber opera in June 2011, Frankfurt Opera, Bockenheimer Depot, Frankfurt am Main, Director: Ute E. Engelhardt

Orchestral works

Sallinen has composed so far eight symphonies as well as one solo concerto for violin, cello, flute and horn, such as his Prelude Op 52 Shadows

  • Cello Concerto, perf. 1977 Lucerne Festival
  • 4th Symphony, composed in 1979 for the anniversary of the Finnish city of Turku
  • 5th Symphony, commissioned by the Washington Symphony Orchestra, world premiere. 1985 in Washington

In addition to vocal and choral music, which he often dedicated children's choirs, he wrote film scores, such as the early 80s the music for the multi-part TV film Iron time about the epic Kalevala.
