Aunis

Aunis ( Pays d' Aunis ) is a historic province of the Kingdom of France. It is in the west of the country in today's Charente -Maritime.

Geography

The Pays d' Aunis stretched from the Marais Poitevin in the north to Saintonge and the lowlands to the east and the Niortais Rochefortais in the south. In the West, Aunis bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Its main town was La Rochelle.

History

Was on March 4, 1790, in application of the law of 22 December 1789 formed from the Aunis and Saintonge parts of the new department of Charente- Inférieure, which was renamed on 4 September 1941 in Charente- Maritime.
