Aupouri Peninsula

Geographical location

The Peninsula is a tombolo Aupouri ( dunes ) on the northern tip of the North Island of New Zealand. It extends between the Tasman Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east in a north- westerly direction to the sea. The area is part of the Far North District administratorisch the Northland region and covers the areas of North Cape, Houhora and the northern half of Awanui.

The Aupouri Peninsula is the northernmost part of a larger peninsula, the North Auckland Peninsula, covering almost one-twelfth of the land mass of New Zealand. Near the town of Kaitaia, the North Auckland Peninsula narrows abruptly from 60 km to 10 km wide and extends in the width another 100 km to the north.
