History

In the Neolithic hunters have come north of Hongars on their forays into the dense beech forests.

Documentary evidence is a Bavarian colonization by 800 with the usual for this time - ing names Wörtzing and Jetzing. The place name Herzogenaurach indicates a settlement on a river crossing.

In the High Middle Ages ( around 1200) a part of the territory of Herzogenaurach belonged to the Hongar located near Passau monastery Asbach / Rott, another part of the Count Gebhard of Regau.

1458 consecrated bishop of Passau Sigismund chapel - St. patronage. Evangelist Matthew and St.. Alexius the Confessor ( hermit / recluse ). As a result, the pastor of Attersee am Attersee was obliged to read every Thursday in Herzogenaurach a fair. In the wake of Emperor Joseph Church reform Herzogenaurach received in 1784 its own pastor, but was until 1876 an independent parish. After the old parish church was burned down in 1888, the still existing new building was inaugurated in 1893.

It is interesting that already in 1594 in a church account a schoolmaster is mentioned in Herzogenaurach. In this context, the St. to the hermitage near the chapel Alexi is important to note, whose construction was approved in 1726 by the Prince-Bishop of Passau Joseph Dominicus at the request of Count Khevenhüller. The hermit, brother Josef Würth, former writer of the Counts Khevenhüller chamber, was given the task to teach the youth in reading and writing.

Coat of arms

Blazon: In a decreased gold, blue wave bar, topped with two golden wave bars bars; above a black aurochs head in sight, down a green Dreienberg. The municipality colors are black and yellow-blue.

The coat of arms was granted in 1980. As canting arms of the aurochs head and the waves explain the place name ( for OHG = aurochs and aha = running water). The wave bar stands for the drought Herzogenaurach, the three mountain for the Hongar.
