Aurel, Drôme

Aurel is a commune in the Drôme and the Rhône -Alpes region. The remote village in Provence with 241 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is reached via a small paved road, about 1 hour from the highway at Valence. The church was built partly on a steep rock. The houses there are sometimes only be reached on foot.

History

Aurel was from the 13th century up to the time of the French Revolution fiefdom of the bishops of the. In the 11th century there were four churches there, for the size of the village, an amazing number.

Attractions

Local attractions include a small church of Saint Pierre, and a memorial to the fallen of the First World War from the village. Both are located right at the entrance.

Economy

Economically marked is the place of viticulture on the surrounding slopes. There also is a small campsite at the village entrance.
