Aurich (district)

The district of Aurich, based in Aurich is located in the extreme north- west of Lower Saxony. With about 190,000 inhabitants, spread over around 1287 square kilometers, the county is both by population and by area the largest county of Ostfriesland region consisting of the districts of Aurich, Leer and Witt mouth and the independent city of Emden. Aurich is the seventh largest county by population in Lower Saxony ( the eighth largest among Inclusive of the Hanover region ).

The county was formed in part of the Lower Saxony district reform 1977/78 from the former district of Aurich and the district north. He now has 24 kreisangehorige cities and towns. Eleven of these communities have come together to form two joint communities. Four municipalities have city status: Aurich, North, Norderney and Meadow Moor. The three places Hage, Marienhafe and Pewsum (municipality Krummhoern ) are city-like settlements with market law, called spots.

Nationally known is the district of Aurich primarily as a resort area with the three islands of Juist, Norderney and Baltrum and coastal resorts such as North dike and Greetsiel. Measured by the number of nights is the most tourism in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony.

Geography

The county area includes the north-western corner of Germany with its offshore North Sea Islands Baltrum, Juist and Norderney.

The district is the center of the historic landscape Ostfriesland. In the west and north, the North Sea forms a natural border. In the east it borders on the district Witt mouth and on the south by the district of Leer and the independent city of Emden.

History

Main article: History of East Frisia

Counties were introduced in Ostfriesland in the wake of the Prussian municipal reform of 1885. They were benefiting from the previous office structure that had initially taken the Prussians from the Hanoverian period. The district of Aurich in 1885 formed according to the new district regulations for the province of Hanover from the office of the independent city of Aurich and Aurich. Other offices held in East Frisia at that time, the counties Emden, Leer, North, Weener and Witt mouth (to which, until 1 April 1919, the city of Wilhelmshaven an exclave belonged ) and the independent city of Emden.

In the district reform of 1932, the circles were Weener (complete the district of Leer affiliated ) and Emden dissolved. The majority of the district Emden came to the county north, especially the area of today's communities Krummhoern and rear as well as some villages that have since been incorporated into the city of Emden. The district of Aurich was not affected by the municipal reform.

In 1945/ 46, the former communities and neighborhoods today Emden Harsweg and Larrelt were spun off from the district north and incorporated to Emden. In the early 1950s, the districts of Aurich and mouth Witt agreed, the former municipality Wiesmoor to enlarge and completely to annex the district of Aurich. Parts of the high moorland, out of which Wiesmoor arose previously belonged still to the district Witt mouth.

In the Lower Saxon town of reform in 1972 larger unit municipalities or joint communities were formed from a variety of small communities. These persist to this day. In addition, the city of Emden common end to a more villages from the district north, namely Twixlum, Wybelsum and Logumer Vorwerk.

The district of Aurich, in its present expansion was in 1977 /78 part of the Lower Saxony district reform and was formed from the former districts of Aurich and north. The time Aurich was determined to county seat, in the north remained only a branch of the county government with offices that are frequented more by citizens in general, as social welfare office and Department of Motor Vehicles.

Even today, sometimes (especially in local politics ) to observe some separation lines between the former counties. It is sometimes still always spoken to by the old districts of Aurich and north.

Population Development

2007 Of the approximately 190,000 residents in the county were about 5,500 foreigners. The proportion of foreigners is thus lower than the national average. Policy

The district of Aurich is regarded as one of the strongholds of the SPD in Germany. In the 2005 federal election the party won in the constituency Aurich / Emden, to which the county and the city of Emden count, with 55.9 percent of the vote, the best result of second votes in Germany. In the district council, the SPD has the majority, in many councils it also represents only the majority or is part of a majority group. Several mayors are also included in the SPD. In recent years, however, increasingly non-party candidates have been able to catch on with the mayor - elections, including in the county town of Aurich.

Council

The Aurich district administration has a number of privately organized companies and holds shares in the company. The Ubbo Emmius Clinic gGmbH is 100 percent owned by the county and operates two hospitals in Aurich and north. To 25 percent of the county to the disabled North gGmbH is involved. Holds 100 percent of the county is also on the Kreisvolkshochschule and the music school, to 87.75 percent at the rescue center of the district. In the district election, the SPD and the CDU candidate supported by Harm -Uwe Weber prevailed with 45.9 percent of the vote. Its a contestant Antje Gronewold (independent, supported by outdoor voters, FDP and Greens) won 42.2 percent of the vote, which left Martin Heilemann 9.2 percent and the individual candidate Ottavio Endrizzi 2.7 percent.

County Council Election 2006

At the election of the council on September 10, 2006 was attended by 90 365 154 269 of the electors, representing a turnout of 58.6 percent. The Aurich district council consisted of 58 elected members and the directly-elected District. In the district council, the representatives of four parties and a voter communities were selected. The SPD had missed at the municipal election in 2006 for the first time in decades, the absolute majority scarce. SPD and the Greens agreed then a cooperation council. Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the district of Aurich shows a golden angel, who is the former coat of arms of Cirksenas family modeled a noble family from Greetsiel. This is known not to be "genuine " angel, but a harpy, an evil female demon with wings and claws from Greek mythology, in heraldry as " virgin eagle ".

Through the district of Aurich lead 7.2 km of running from Emden to Bottrop Federal Highway 31 Furthermore, there are in the district 93.5 km main roads, in the course of the B 72, B 210 and B 436, the country roads with the numbers 1 to 8, 12, 14, 25-27 and 34 are wholly or partly in the district of Aurich. There are a total 179.4 km state roads. The county as a road authority is responsible for 393.7 km county roads.

Rail traffic

The Prussian State Railway opened in 1883, the railway line from Emden to the former county town of the North (now Emsland line ), and from there to Jever and Wilhelmshaven / Oldenburg. A branch line set in the former district capital Aurich Norden - From Abelitz was simultaneously with the construction of the line Emden. A continuation of the north to north dike followed in 1892, the extension to the north dike Mole, which allowed for a direct connection to the ferry to Norderney, Juist and Baltrum, 1895 was completed.

Currently (2010) served the four stations Marienhafe, north, north dike and dike north jetty at the Emsland electrified route regularly in regional rail and long-distance transport. In the past there were moreover more rail connections in the County: On the island of Juist the AG Reederei Norden - Frisia operation from 1898 a horse-drawn tram, and on July 27, 1899, the orbit Emden Pewsum - Greetsiel started its operations. From Aurich from the distances of the orbit spaces Aurich -Witt mouth GmbH led (originally circular path Witt mouth - Aurich -Space GmbH), were involved in the three circles, one hand in 1899 after Witt mouth ( with 1909 completed diversion Ogenbargen - Esen - Bensersiel ) and on the other hand 1900 Grossefehn to Leer. In Half Moon is the largest stadium in East Friesland, the motodrome Half Moon is with a capacity of 50,000 seats. It was specially built for the Speedway World Championship in 1983. The handball third division ( third division ) OHV Aurich is the most höchstklassigsten playing handball club in the district.
