Rail traffic

The Prussian State Railway opened in 1883, the railway line from Emden to the former county town of the North (now Emsland line ), and from there to Jever and Wilhelmshaven / Oldenburg. A branch line set in the former district capital Aurich Norden - From Abelitz was simultaneously with the construction of the line Emden. A continuation of the north to north dike followed in 1892, the extension to the north dike Mole, which allowed for a direct connection to the ferry to Norderney, Juist and Baltrum, 1895 was completed.

Currently (2010) served the four stations Marienhafe, north, north dike and dike north jetty at the Emsland electrified route regularly in regional rail and long-distance transport. In addition to all two hours trains running regional train, which connects the stations via Oldenburg and Bremen, Hannover, also run every two hours Intercity trains of the line 35 via Münster, Duisburg and Dusseldorf to Cologne, and partly in addition to Luxembourg. In addition, individual intercity connections are on the line 56 north dike Mole - Bremen - Hannover - Magdeburg - Leipzig / Berlin. From the north creates a bus connection to the trains of Esen to Wilhelmshaven, as well as coastal resorts and ferry ports in the districts of Aurich and Witt mouth. The former railway line from north to Esen is today, after removal of part of the line tracks, only to Dornum passable. Since 1987, the club museum train coast track Ostfriesland operates a heritage railway traffic here. In addition, there is a good chance that eventually line is again to Wilhelmshaven made one continuous section. In 2009 joined to the neighboring municipalities into an agreement to secure the railway line, after one of them commissioned report to reactivate the route turned out overwhelmingly positive.

Nearly 15 years after closure of the railway line from Abelitz to Aurich was reopened in 2008, not least after the wind turbine manufacturer Enercon opposite the city of Aurich made it clear that further investment is dependent on a connection to the railway network in the city. On the route today takes place mainly freight to the port of Emden. A reactivation of passenger transport is not provided on this route at the time. Aurich thus remains one of the few district towns in Germany with no connection to the rail passenger transport.

In the past there were moreover more rail connections in the County: On the island of Juist the AG Reederei Norden - Frisia operation from 1898 a horse-drawn tram, and on July 27, 1899, the orbit Emden Pewsum - Greetsiel started its operations. From Aurich from the distances of the orbit spaces Aurich -Witt mouth GmbH led (originally circular path Witt mouth - Aurich -Space GmbH), were involved in the three circles, one hand in 1899 after Witt mouth ( with 1909 completed diversion Ogenbargen - Esen - Bensersiel ) and on the other hand 1900 Grossefehn to Leer. Traces of these rail lines are today, after demolition of the facilities, only occasionally discernible.
