Aurlandsfjord

Aurlandfjord

The Aurlandfjord is a branch of the Sognefjord. The area around the fjord is dominated by agriculture and, in recent decades by tourism. In earlier times, the places along the fjord were very remote. Only through the construction of tunnels in the 1980s and 1990s, the area was accessible all year round by car. Mid-19th century there was a strong emigration to America.

In the southeast of Nærøyfjorden branches off from Aurlandfjord. Important towns on the estuary are Flåm and Aurlandsvangen. On Aurlandfjord also the village Undredal lies with the stave church Undredal.
