Australian Aboriginal Flag

The flag of the Aborigines is the Aboriginal symbol.

Description and significance

The flag is divided horizontally, black on top and red on the bottom. In the middle there is a yellow disc. The aborigine -born artist Harold Thomas, who had designed the flag, did not state their importance of their elements. Therefore, different interpretations are outstanding:

  • The yellow disc symbolizes the sun as the giver of life.
  • Black stands for the dark-skinned natives, or - in a different interpretation - for the night sky.
  • Red stands for the proverbial red Country of Central Australia, or - interpreted differently - for the exuded in the last two hundred years of blood Aborigines.

Red are the mother earth and ocher, which is used for ceremonies. Yellow is the sun, the constant giver and renewer of life. Black is the dream time in which everything is created. Together the colors symbolize the foundation of life of Aboriginal people.

History

Harold Thomas designed the flag in 1971., You blew from the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in 1972 in front of the Australian Parliament in Canberra, before the embassy was closed in 1977. In 1995, the flag of the Australian Government was officially adopted as a " flag of Australia ".

Worldwide attention was given to the flag of the Aboriginal people, as Cathy Freeman showed after winning a gold medal in the 400 -meter run of the women at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, not only the Australian flag, but also the Aboriginal flag in the stadium, although only the showing of official national flags are allowed in Olympic stadiums.

Copyright

The copyright of the design of the flag has claimed an Australian case law Harold Thomas. This was decided by the Australian Federal Court ( Federal Court of Australia ) in April 1997. Only the company Carroll and Richardson Flags has to make of Thomas since 1998 the license that flag.

Others

As part of the dispute over the Union Jack flag in the national flag of Australia, among other things, a variant is proposed, in which the Aboriginal flag is in the naval jack of the national flag instead of the Union Jack. This flag is always used in political demonstrations or as a bumper sticker.
