Founded in 1958, The Australian Film Institute (AFI ) has the task of promoting Australian film and television productions.

History

The Australian Film Institute founded in 1958 as a nonprofit organization launched to promote the establishment of an independent film industry in Australia. She has since co-producer and financier of many Australian productions, including David Lynch's Eraserhead and by public funds, corporate sponsors and membership fees (approx. 10,000 members) financed.

In August 2011, the AFI founded the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts ( AACTA ). It was modeled on the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The main task of the Academy, in 15 subgroups ( Chapter) representatives are from all relevant film and television professions, is the award of the AACTA Awards, which will replace the AFI Awards since 1958. The first president of the Academy of actor Geoffrey Rush was named.
