Australian Maritime Safety Authority

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority ( AMSA ) is an Australian authority which is primarily responsible for the rescue. It is the responsibility, the Commonwealth of Australia under its organization, which is responsible for the regulation of the Australian shipping fleet and for their safe passage and for international maritime affairs. The AMSA is funded by taxes from the shipping industry.

Tasks

The marine safety responsibilities of AMSA are:

  • Provision of marine aids to navigation, such as monitoring of lighthouses
  • Warranty of seaworthiness and safety of Australian and foreign ships in Australian waters
  • Monitoring and implementation of certification of maritime
  • Warranty maritime emergency and secure communications
  • Coordination of the headquarters of the Australian search and rescue system, and coordination of search and rescue operations for civil aviation and shipping
  • The development of safe ships and legal and organizational systems

The AMSA supports marine conservation by:

  • Creating programs for the protection and restoration of environmental damage caused by ship emergencies or accidents, and the
  • Implementation of the Australia National Plan to Combat ölverseuchtem water and other hazardous and toxic substances.

Activities

As part of the search for the lost Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the AMSA search actions in the maritime area coordinated in March 2014 to the west of Australia.
