Austrian legislative election, 1949

The parliamentary election on 9 October 1949, the sixth in the history of the Republic of Austria and at the same time the second after the period of National Socialism. Strongest party was the ÖVP Chancellor Leopold Figl, but the lost voices and their absolute majority of seats forfeited. The Social Democratic Party under Adolf Scharf lost about the same number of votes as the People's Party and was the second largest party. Choosing Party newly established the Independent on first attempt to jump over the hurdle basic mandate and was the third-strongest force remained their share of the vote before the Communist Party, about the same.

Were entitled to vote 4,391,815 people. The turnout was 95.49 percent ( 1945: 93.27 percent).

Background

1949 were eligible to vote again from the approximately 556 000 Austrian National Socialists 90%. With the election of the Independent Party, the forerunner of the FPÖ party, there was a party that was a gathering point for the former Nazi party members. However, the ÖVP and SPÖ fighting for the votes of former Nazis.

1947 left the Communist Party, from 1945 onwards the concentration of government. The only KPO Minister Karl Altmann resigned from his post as head of the energy department. This was due to his protest against the second currency reform, which resulted in a very strong financial position worse the lower income groups.
