The parliamentary elections on May 13, 1956 was the eighth in the history of Austria. The ÖVP Chancellor Julius Raab was under most votes and party overtook the Social Democratic Party of Adolf Scharf, who came only to second place despite a slight vocal profits. The third place which emerged from the VdU FPÖ with the former SS Brigadier Anton Reinthaller as the leading candidate. The Communist Party, which this time took under the list name ' Communists and Left Socialists ', lost votes, reaching only just a basic mandate.

Were entitled to vote 4,614,464 people. The turnout was 94.31 percent ( 1953: 94.15 percent).

Background

The general election in 1956 was the first after the Austrian State Treaty between the Federal Government and the victorious powers of World War II (USA, USSR, France and Britain ) on 15 May 1955. 's International role of Austria has been redefined by the decision of the neutrality law.

At the same time the conclusion of the State Treaty marked a break with regard to the processing of the National Socialist past.
