The National Assembly elections on 10 May 1959, the ninth in the history of Austria. Votes strongest party was the Social Democratic Party under Bruno Pitter man. In second place, the ÖVP Chancellor Julius Raab landed under which, however, due to the electoral arithmetic, a mandate was given more than the SPÖ. The FPÖ under the former SS First Lieutenant Friedrich Peter was able to win votes and seats, while the Communist Party managed no reason mandate for the first time.

Were entitled to vote 4,696,603 people. The turnout was 92.90 percent (1956: 94.31 percent).

The grand coalition of ÖVP and SPÖ continued. The ÖVP was allowed to continue to provide the Chancellor with Julius Raab, for it was the Social Democratic Party, which represented the Vice- Chancellor Bruno Pitter man, in addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The federal government took Raab III on 16 July 1959 their work. On November 3, followed in 1960, the federal government Raab IV and on 11 April 1961, the federal government took Gorbach I the business.
