Austrian legislative election, 1970

The parliamentary election on March 1, 1970, the twelfth in the history of Austria. Votes and most seats the party was the Social Democratic Party of Bruno Kreisky. Second place went to the People's Party of Josef Klaus, lost votes and seats. The Freedom Party, which contested with former SS First Lieutenant Frederick Peter as top candidates could post some votes wins.

Were entitled to vote 5,045,841 people. The turnout was 90.95 percent (1966: 92.74 ). After the election Kreisky formed the federal government Kreisky I; he remained chancellor until April / May 1983.

According to the original election results, the SPÖ received 48.2 % of the vote and 81 seats, the ÖVP 44.8 % and 79 seats, the FPÖ 5.5% and 5 seats. By a judgment of the Constitutional Court of 24 June 1970, the National Council election was declared in three Viennese constituencies invalid and there redials on 4 October 1970. Due to the re-run election, the FPÖ won an extra seat at the expense of the ÖVP.

After protracted coalition negotiations with the ÖVP, the SPÖ formed with the support of the Freedom Party form a minority government. It is speculated Kreisky had this goal from the outset and negotiates with the ÖVP in appearance only. Prize for the Freedom Party support was a suffrage amendment, the less disadvantaged smaller parties, as then, the FPÖ and an associated increase in the number of seats in the National Council. Chancellor Bruno Kreisky was and should remain until 1983. The federal government Kreisky I took on April 21, 1970 to their work. Josef Klaus put 1970 the ÖVP presidency back, succeeded by his former deputy, Hermann Withalm.
