Austrian legislative election, 1990

The parliamentary elections on October 7, 1990 was the 18th general election in the history of the Republic of Austria. Strongest party was the Social Democrats under Chancellor Franz Vranitzky. The SPÖ lost votes, maintained its number of seats, however. Strong losses had the ÖVP under Josef Riegler accept, it was the second largest party. Of the losses of the ÖVP benefited the FPÖ, which adds won with Norbert Gugerbauer as top candidates mandates and voices. The Green Alternative managed with Voggenhuber again a place in the National Council, lost votes, but was able to win two seats.

Were entitled to vote 5,628,912 people. Voter turnout dropped to 83.58 percent (1986: 88.85 ).

Follow

After the election, the SPÖ and ÖVP continued the existing since 1986 grand coalition. Vranitzky ( SPÖ) remained Chancellor. The federal government took Vranitzky III on 17 December 1990 on their work. Josef Riegler (ÖVP ) remained until 1991 Vice Chancellor, he was succeeded by Erhard Busek.
