Autariatae

The Autariaten were one of the largest Illyrian tribes. The strain was late Celticized in its history and moved northeast of the Prokletija in present-day border between Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro.

At the end of the 6th century BC, the Autariaten to a political entity were. They began to expand to the east in metallic tribal territory and suppressed the up to the southern bank of the Danube. In addition, they penetrated to the south and defeated their long rival, the Ardianen to have their pastures and salt sources for themselves. The Ardianen then migrated south to the Adriatic Sea. With this expansion, the Autariaten reached a hegemonic control over the interior of the Balkan peninsula. The leader of the class Autariaten left large sovereign tumuli, created during the 5th century BC.

The Roman historian Appian wrote that the Ardianen have been weakened by the Autariaten, partly because those unlike them had a naval fleet.
