Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists

The Authorization for Use of Military Force ( AUMF; German approval for use of military force ) is a law of the United States, which the President granted permission to use the armed forces in the fight against terrorism. The law was by Congress on 14 September 2001 in response to the attacks of 11 September 2001, Congress passed with only one dissenting vote (Senate: 98:0, House of Representatives: 420:1 ). It includes a broad mandate for the President to use all "necessary and appropriate force" against anyone who has the attacks on 11 September 2001 " planned, authorized, carried out or supported " in its discretion, or helping such individuals or groups. The law became effective after being signed by the President on 18 September 2001.
