Automated X-ray inspection

The automatic X-ray inspection (english automated X -ray inspection, AXI ) is a testing the components fitted to the control circuit board is used. It belongs to the field of automated optical inspection ( AOI). Instead of light, however, X-rays are evaluated here, which internal structures of electronic components such as contacts, leads and solder joints are visible.

The test with AXI is more often associated with a concurrent AOI inspection.

Process

For chip packages such as ball grid array connections to the PCB are not completely optically detectable. A testing facility for control of the electrical contacts allow for an x-ray inspection with low intensity. AXI can faults such as open connections, short circuits, insufficient Lötmenge, too much solder, missing parts, etc. twisted uncover components. The evaluation of the radiographs can be performed at series by appropriate image processing applications automatically. This makes it possible defective assemblies quickly find and repair within a short time.

These test systems are more expensive than regular optical inspection system, but it can also test all connections.
