Autophradates

Autophradates (Greek Aὐτοφραδάτης; † after 332 BC) was a Persian fleet commander in the 4th century BC.

After the death of Memnon in the year 333 BC Pharnabazos and Autophradates took over the command of the Persian fleet to lead the fight against the marching straight through Asia Minor, Alexander the Great. Both organized a counter- offensive to the sea and conquered Among other things, Tenedos and Mytilene, whose siege had already begun Memnon and whose installed by Alexander democratic constitutions they eliminated in favor of tyranny. Also they made attacks on some Aegean islands and made contact with Sparta, the purpose of joint action against Macedonia.

This success lasted only until the summer of 332 BC, when the Macedonians were under Hegelochos and Amphoteros to sea on the offensive and took the Hellespont under their control. The Persian position in the Aegean finally collapsed when Alexander invaded Phoenicia and its cities submitted to him voluntarily. This meant that 80 Phoenician, Cypriot and 120 per ten Lycian and Cilician ships from the Persian fleet deposed and went over to the side of Alexander. Thus deprived of their naval power could Pharnabazos and Autophradates the Macedonian fleet oppose anything that could conquer sequentially Tenedos, Mytilene, Lesvos, Kos and finally Chios. Autophradates ' fate is unknown, it may have in the service of Sparta still a mercenary army, led consisting of scattered Persian troops from Asia Minor to Crete.

He extent to identical or related to the same satrap of Lydia, from the year 360 BC was, is unclear. Not to be confused he is with his contemporaries Autophradates, satrap of Tapurien and Mardien.
