Autos sacramentales

An auto sacramental is a religious play, which was traditionally played at Corpus Christi. It is a specifically Spanish genre, but shows certain parallels to the moralities.

In the autos allegorical characters occur, for example, Hope, love, death and sin represent. The allegories act here in some form of the sacrament of the Eucharist.

This form first appeared in the 16th century and reached its peak with the pieces of Pedro Calderón de la Barca, including The Great World Theatre.
