The Autostrada A23 ( for, highway A23 ' in Italian), also Autostrada Alpe -Adria (italian for " Alps - Adriatic highway " ) called, is an Italian highway in the northeast of the country. It is regarded as one of the most important north -south connections in Italy, as it connects the Austrian Southern Motorway / A2 with the Italian A4 (Turin -Trieste ) and thus represents the main link between Italy and Central Europe. The A23 is approximately 120 km long toll road and runs entirely within the province of Udine (Friuli- Venezia Giulia ).

Route

The highway is part of the European route E55, which runs from Helsingborg (Sweden) over Czech Republic and Austria to Kalamata in Greece.

The A23 branches in Palma Nova on the A4 and then heads north. At km 13 they reached the junction of the provincial capital of Udine / Sud, where also the first rest stop of the route, Zugliano located. This rest station (Italian: Servizio Area ) is located on both sides. Between Udine / Sud and Udine / North State Road 13 runs parallel to the A23. It forms the tangenziale Ovest, the western bypass of the city. North of the junction Udine / north motorway now runs in a hilly area, which is formed by moraines in the last ice age. At kilometer 37 they reached the rest stop Ledra, which is accessible from both directions.

Passing Tarcento it reaches the junction Gemona del Friuli. Nearby Gemonas are the towns of San Daniele del Friuli, Tricesimo, Faedis and Majano. Here in 1976 was the epicenter of the earthquake of Friuli. Behind the connection point they crossed the Tagliamento over a bridge that has a length of 1259 m.

Now the A23 enters the Alps. The first tunnel of the route, Lake is 1.5 km long. The route leads westward of Cavazzo and reaches the next junction Carnia / Tolmezzo. From Tolmezzo out she turns eastward, past the confluence between the Tagliamento and the Fella. Here is the rest stop Campiolo. Here is the rest area only in the direction of travel Palma Nova, the direction of Austria here is a car park where you can reach through a connecting corridor, the rest station.

About Moggio Udinese and Chiusaforte it reaches the Canal del Ferro, who was only passable by the erection of numerous tunnels. Here is located just before the junction Pontebba the eponymous tunnel, which is also the longest track with 2,278 m. The connection point Pontebba at km 93 is designed entirely as bridges that reach a length of 504 m. Until 1918 was at Pontebba the border between Italy and Austria.

The highway changes one last time their direction to the east and passes through the Canal Valley (Italian: Valle Canale ). Here is toward Austria at km 96 of the Parking La Foresta, also has a directly accessible from the highway eponymous museum. At km 97, is the last resting place of the track, which is only accessible in the direction of Austria, however.

At km 105 it reaches the tollbooth Ugovizza. Because here all vehicles have to pay the toll, it always comes back to 1-2 km long tailbacks, especially during the summer holiday period. Here is just the direction of Palma Nova, the half junction Malborghetto - Valbruna.

In Tarvisio there are two half interchanges. Tarvisio -Sud has a descent direction Austria to the SS 13 Pontebbana, this is the last exit in Italy. Here is a driveway on the A23 only in the direction Palmanova- Udine is possible. The further east junction Tarvisio North allows a ramp to Austria and the A2 and a descent into the town of Tarvisio. Affixed on the highways signs can be seen at two connection points only Tarvisio.

Behind the A23 Tarvisio leads to the border near the village of Coccau ( German Goggau ), where it passes the Schengen border with Austria and opens directly into the A2. The boundary building has already been removed. The A2 continues to Villach and further via Graz to Vienna.

Expansion of state

The highway is mostly four lanes today. However, between junctions Udine Udine North and South, it is expanded to six lanes. Between km 18.5 in Udine and the junction Carnia the barriers were renewed between the two directions of travel in 2009 and 2010.

It applies on the basis of the modern criteria during the construction phase as one of the best highways in Europe.

History

Before the opening of the A23 main road of Carinthia led to Italy via the Strada Statale 13 Pontebbana. This route, however, was no longer suitable as early as the 1980s for the traffic volume on this section. With construction of the A23, a powerful north-south connection was created.

The first section of Palma Nova to Udine / South was opened in 1966 after two years of construction. The section between Tarvisio and Udine / North was built in 1973-1986 and the remaining piece between Udine / North and South was opened in 1988 after two years of construction.

Structures

In the section between Tarvisio and Gemona del Friuli large parts of the route are out in tunnels or on bridges due to the alpine location. Overall, the A23 in the direction Austria has 21.717 kilometers, that are performed in the tunnel. Add to Palma Nova there are 20.211 km.

On the route are also numerous bridges. The longest bridge is the Tagliamento I, crosses the same river at Gemona del Friuli and has a length of 1259 m.

Others

The car park La Foresta was tested by ADAC 2009. The picnic area was rated "adequate".

Management

Between the junction of the A23 from the A4 near Palma Nova to overpass the SS 13 at kilometer 18.5 it is managed by the highway authority Autovie venete headquartered in Trieste.

From km 18.5 to the border with Austria in Coccau it is managed by Autostrade per l' Italia.

Planned construction

A connection to the A27 at Tolmezzo is planned. The A27 should be extended from Belluno, its current end, Pieve di Cadore, the Mauria and the Tagliamento to the A23.

Gemona to the end point of a new highway be branching from the A28 at Pordenone and should lead northward over Sequals up to Gemona the A23. Current plans provide for this, the feeder road RA16 at 58 km to extend northward to Sequals and then eastward to Gemona del Friuli to the A23 motorway. This is a connection between the A23 and A28 motorways are created and also a reduction in travel time between Gemona and Pordenone be reached because Udine is thus bypassed north.
