The Autostrada A9 (Italian for, A9 ') is an Italian motorway in the north of the country, which is also part of the Autostrada dei Laghi. It is 32.4 km long and toll roads.

Course

The A9 branches off about 20 km north of Milan from the A8 motorway. Then she leads northward through the Po Valley passing through the villages Saronno, Turate and Lurate up to Como near the Lake Como area.

Here they reached the border crossing at Como / Brogeda their endpoint. The continuation in Switzerland are made by the A2.

History

The A9 is considered the oldest of the Italian motorways and one of the oldest in the world. The highway was opened on June 28, 1925 between Lainate and Como. The connection to the Swiss A2 with the border crossing was opened on 1 December 1971.

Management and development of state

The highway is now managed by the Italian motorway company Autostrade per l' Italia. The chainage of the A9 will not start as usually at 0 km, but at km 10.7. The first 10 km are part of the A8.

The A9 is currently being expanded to four lanes throughout the section. Since the highway represents an important link Milan with Switzerland and northern Europe, the A9 is currently being expanded to six lanes on almost the entire section. On 27 July 2009 started the construction work, which include the following projects:

  • The construction of 13 km of noise barriers and
  • Six-lane expansion between km 11 and km 34 of the highway

The total length of the construction phase is 23.2 km. The total cost amounts to 425.9 million euros. The construction work is expected to be completed in 2012.

Toll

The A9 is a toll road, but it has, unlike most highways, another toll system. Normally, the amount of the toll is determined by the distance traveled and used road and the vehicle class. The toll is paid on exiting the motorway motorway stations.

However, this highway is an open system ( Italian: sistema Aperto ) managed, ie at the two toll stations, regardless of the distance traveled, just a lump sum levied.
