Auxonne

Auxonne is a commune with 7756 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Côte- d'Or in the Burgundy region. The city is the capital of the eponymous canton Auxonne.

Geography

Auxonne is located about 30 kilometers south-east of Dijon and 15 km north- west of Dole, on the left bank of the Saône. Traffic Technically, the city is served by the A39 motorway, which runs to the city just southwest over, and by the railway Dijon Vallorbe.

History

Here existed between the 10th and 13th century the county Auxonne. 1229 Auxonne became a town, later it was even mint. A castle protected the then militarily significant transition over the Saône. End of the 15th century, after the annexation of Burgundy by France, was Louis XI. built a still visible bulit castle on the river bank. This castle and the city walls were expanded into a bastion with a moat in the 17th century according to the concept of Vauban.

Personalities

Is particularly proud of the fact that Napoleon Bonaparte was stationed as a young lieutenant in the former garrison town ( 1787-1791 ). Here he has written one of his first political writings.
