Avala

Avala ( Serbian Cyrillic Авала ) the designation of a 511 m high mountain is around 18 kilometers south of the city center of Belgrade. The wooded mountain is since 1859 a nature reserve. In the Middle Ages the mountain was an important strategic point from which the access road to Belgrade could be controlled. 1938, a mausoleum was built to commemorate the Serbian heroes of the First World War on the top of Avala. The monument of the Unknown Soldier is a work of Ivan Mestrovic. Not far from the mausoleum stands a monument to the Soviet war veterans. On the Avala is named after the mountain Avala Tower, which was destroyed during a NATO air strike in 1999 and rebuilt in 2009.
