Avallon
Avallon is a commune and seat of the sub-prefecture of the same arrondissement in the Yonne department in the Bourgogne region (Burgundy ). Avallon has 7229 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).
History
Avallon was built before about 2000 years as a Gallic stronghold of the Aedui and proved to be due to its location on a granite plateau above the valley of the River Cousin to be strategically important. During this time it was called the Aballo. In the 1st century AD Roman merchants established an outpost on the cousin. After the defeat of the Anglo -Roman army Riothamus king in 470 AD against the Goths, Avallon became his escape seat, where he probably died. The life of this king and legends surrounding its historic character made him one of the models for the early medieval Arthurian legend. During the High Middle Ages Avallon was expanded into a major fortress and surrounded by a high, reinforced by numerous towers town wall.
During the period of absolutism Avallon became less important, at the time of the French Revolution, agriculture was the most important economic factor in the region.
