Avast! works as a resident provider, so as a background process that scans the processed data for malware. By dividing into eight sub-processes (file system, mail, web protection, P2P, IM, network, script, and behavioral protection) these can be activated or deactivated as needed.

Avast! for Windows has a so-called incremental update feature that checks for new program versions and virus information and only downloads files that are not listed in their own installation. Thus, the duration of the running in the background and automatically updates can be shortened.

AVAST was originally an acronym for " Anti-Virus Advanced Set". The acronym but plays with his resemblance to an expression that goes back to the exclamation " houd vast! " Dutch sailors, which means " Hold on! ". This was considered as a suitable name for the program, since the bid can be also understood as "Stop! ". Hence also the exclamation mark.
