Avegno, Switzerland

Avegno is a fraction of the community Avegno Gordevio in the district of Valle Maggia the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

On April 20, 2008 and merged Avegno Gordevio to the municipality Avegno Gordevio.

Geography

The self-employed until the spring of 2008 community is on the left side of the river Maggia, after whom the valley is named. Avegno is the one place in the Maggia Valley, which is closest to Locarno. The village originally consisted of three separate districts: Avegno di Fuori, Avegno Chiesa di Dentro and Avegno. These are grown together. The village itself lies largely in the valley. But already the upper houses are perched on a predominantly wooded with chestnut trees overhang. Above the hill begins the mountain area of the fraction with high Alps and mountains. Of the total area of 813 ha former municipality, therefore, only 8% of agricultural land. Demographics

Through emigration towards Italy, the population went in the 18th century sharply. You then stagnated until 1850. In the 1850s, the congregation followed the trend of overseas emigration (California and Australia). The population then rose as a result of the settlement of companies briefly again (1860-1888: 21%). This was followed by an unprecedented wave of emigration, which lasted until the beginning of World War II and in the population decreased by 61%. Due to the better road connection and proximity to the local center of Locarno many people were in the last decades in the small town (1941-2004: 223 %) and the community reached a new high of residents. The growth is still intact.

Languages

Previously, the population spoke a local Italian dialect. The migration replaces this use of language and the people are using more and more standard Italian. As in many towns in the region a number of German -speaking ( Swiss and German ) have immigrated. At the last census in 2000 gave 87 % Italian, 9% German, 1 % Danish and French and 0.6% Spanish as their primary language.

Religions - faiths

In earlier times the entire population belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. By leaving the church and immigration from other regions in Switzerland and abroad, this has changed. Of the 540 inhabitants ( end of 2004), 513 (95%) Swiss nationals. At the last census, 92% of Swiss citizens, including 44 dual citizen. The largest immigrant groups come from Italy, Germany and Serbia - Montenegro.

Economy

Previously, the majority of the population worked in agriculture. In 1970, the sector employed industrial and commercial, the majority of workers. History

Avegno is the first time in 1250 mentioned in connection with the village church of San Luca under the name Avenio. The community itself was first mentioned in 1335 as a commune di Vegnio name and belonged to the dominion of the Capitanei of Locarno.
