Avenida Santa Fe

Avenida Santa Fe is one of the main thoroughfares in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.

Overview

1774 was the Avenida, then known as Calle San Gregorio, the northern border of Buenos Aires. After the British invasion of the Río de la Plata in 1806 it was named after Pío Rodríguez. Rodríguez should therefore be honored for his role in the defense of the city. 1810 Argentina declared its independence from Spain and the Avenida was renamed Calle Estrecha (the " Narrow Road "). 1822 was first widened and given its present name. In the course of urban transformation, initiated by Mayor Torcuato de Alvear, it was expanded in the 1880s again. Since 1967, the Santa Fe Avenue is a one way street and runs from west to east.

Course

The Santa Fe Avenue begins in Retiro, at the southern end of the Plaza San Martín. From here, the Avenida offers a view on the built in Art Deco style Edificio Kavanagh and Plaza Hotels and leads past the Palacio Paz (now a public building). The Avenida then leads west past the Olivetti building from 1964, one of the first buildings in the International Style in Buenos Aires and across the wide Avenida 9 de Julio. Next, we see the building of the Argentine Scientific Society in the Greek Revival style and the Teatro Regina in Art Deco style. From Callao Avenue runs through the Recoleta district. This section is a popular area for shopping in Buenos Aires.

Behind the Avenida Callao meets the Santa Fe Avenue on the former Teatro Gran Splendido, which was converted to the bookstore El Ateneo 2000. After the Avenida Pueyrredón line D subway of Buenos Aires runs since the 1920s under the Avenida Santa Fe.

In the Palermo district of Avenida first runs along the Botanical Garden, the Zoo and Plaza Italia with the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, and then passes through the grounds of the La Rural, the Agricultural Fair of Buenos Aires. The Santa Fe Avenue finally ends at Ministro Carranza station, from where it continues as Avenida Cabildo and geographically extends into the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
